The beautiful gothic cathedral - Notre Dame - is located on Ile de la Cité. The cathedral is one of the sights most tourists visit when they are on a holiday in Paris, and Notre Dame which is gathered to be one of the greatest examples of French-Gothic architecture is well worth a visit.

The work on Notre Dame started in 1163, and the cathedral was finished in the middle of the 14th century. Since then the church has been through several improvements and destructions. In 1991 a 10-year project of restoring Notre Dame back to prime condition started, and the cathedral is today one of the most important tourist sights in Paris.

Virgin Mary

Notre Dame was built to honor the Virgin Mary. The cathedral's full name is Notre Dame de Paris, which roughly translates to "Our lady in Paris". And one of the art works you can see inside the church is of course a sculpture of the Virgin Mary.
